The Keepers

The Keepers live in a lighthouse on an island that’s steadily eroding. They are resourceful, respectful of resources, resilient and ready for anything. They’ve seen and been through a lot. Their lighthouse is just as ready for anything, with the seeming ability to transform into whatever the Keepers need of it. The Keepers keep the lighthouse, the island and they keep stories of their adventures too, telling and re-telling them every evening in the glow of a solar-powered lamp.

A blend of spoken word storytelling, original sea-shanties and featuring an array of entertaining characters for family audiences, 'The Keepers' is an intergenerational theatre show for children aged 5+ and their families. The show features two resourceful and playful lighthouse keepers, and will be inspired by rich nuggets of local Dorset history. Incorporating original live music, innovative design and gentle moments of audience interaction, we will also create a dementia-sensitive, sensory version of the show to tour to care homes and residential settings throughout the South West of England.

Collaborating with a theatre designer we will create a robust, purpose-built wooden booth/lighthouse full of interactive features inspired by the British seaside; white and red Punch and Judy stripes, bunting, shiplap boats, shingle and lobster pots.

The family performances will dissolve organically into open-ended play, inviting the families to engage with the set, costume and props to make new stories, supported by the actors.

The Keepers will obliquely model qualities of resilience, imagination and resourcefulness as well as a knowledge of how to exist sympathetically with their changing environment.

This show will tour in 2024.
